First, read the definition and analysis of The Grotesque

After reading it, read Paul's Case.  This story uses two key literary elements to bring about its purpose: Regionalism and The Grotesque.  Read the story carefully and using Device 18 (CAPS), find the symbol/motif that makes the story work, and write a deductive response paragraph answering the prompt:

How does the author use literary devices to establish the tone of the work?

Hint: if you are given a reading the defines the groteque, you might consider writing about the grotesque.
